Advanced Macro Photography Master Class

Advanced Macro Photography Master Class

Beyond 1:1 macro ratio and mastering the art of diffusion.

What Gear Do You Need To Bring?

The Minimum Equipment Needed

DSLR Style Camera

To get the most from this course you need to have a camera that will allow manual manipulation of the ISO, Shutter Speed and Aperture

Dedicated Macro Lens

You'll need to bring a lens that allows for at least 1:1 macro ratio photography. If you're not sure about your lens, contact me and I'll check it for you.

Good Sturdy Tripod

Macro Photography relies on stability first and foremost. You will need to have a good and sturdy tripod in order nail those shots and avoid possible disappointment.

Off Camera Flash

In order to get the absolute best from your macro photography you will need to remove your flash system from the static location of your camera hot-shoe.

Advanced Macro Photography
OK so you've attended my Macro Photography beginners class, you've headed off enthused and started delving more into your new found hobby. You've accomplished some great shots but whilst at the beginning you made monumental bounds in advancing your imaging quality you feel that you've found the limit of either your equipment or understanding of the genre. This Masters Class is a dedicated two day event that will delve into the secrets of Macro Photography. Don't worry, it's not that complicated to learn, all it takes is an open mind and the ability to handle the drenching when those flood gates of understanding finally open!

What Will Be Taught?
Whilst not massively taxing the theory behind macro photography can, for some, seem to be a bit daunting. One awesome aspect of the modern age and the gear we use is that whilst I take the time to explain what it is we need to do and how we need to do it are tasks carried out by the equipment at the flick of a switch. I explain everything as I also feel that we need to know what is happening with the mechanics of the genre in order to fully comprehend it. This is then the best way to be able to question our personal techniques and thus be willing to try new things, to push those envelopes. Beyond the basics which will be covered very briefly you will also be taught about the following:

  • Review of Macro Photography Basics
  • The Physics of Stop Motion Flash
  • The Need for Diffusion
  • Advanced Macro Photography Theory
  • Focus Stacking Techniques
  • Playing With Water Refraction
  • Editing and Presentation of Your Macro Photography

Don't be put off by the subject matter. As mentioned these are simply the guideline points of discussion that will go to explain just what make this genre of imaging more challenging than most people give it credit for. If you have had experience with macro photography and are looking for something more advanced then I firmly believe that this course will suit you down to the ground. It will certainly arm you with the knowledge to create imagery of an equal standard to the macro photography you see showcased on this website.

Course Schedule
To truly get the most from this advanced course we will be dedicating a full weekend for it. This will be spent in the glorious surroundings of the Yanbaru Forests of Northern Okinawa where an absolute treasure trove of potential subject matter awaits. With the particular location I have in mind we will literally have all we could hope for, subject matter wise right on our doorstep.

Attendee Capacity
I prefer to work in smaller groups with a maximum attendee number of just six photographers. Given that I will also be acting in a personal overseeing role during the practical part of the course I don't want attendees to think that they are 'just another student' in a cattle market scenaro. Attendance is on a strictly first come first served basis with all fees being settled at least one week prior to the course start date.

Inclement Weather
As we all know we get a bit of rain here in Okinawa! This however doesn't hinder the running of our Macro Photography courses. Macro is a genre that due to the proximity we need for imaging we can do that either inside or out. Now whilst we all prefer to be shooting in an outdoors environment there are a million and one potential subjects for macro photography and each is as intriguing as the next.
